Welcome to Luperon. The safest hurricane hole in the Caribbean. Tropical weather makes it hot in summer and wet in winter. The trade winds blow from the east most days and with the island effect reach up to 30mph in the afternoon through the bay. Columbus stayed at El Castillo nearby and built a settlement on the island he called Hispaniola, the remains can be seen today; a short ride in the guagua (a small bus). Tours of the local waterfalls and local crafts can be taken with the local tour guides. Local food is good and the Dominican bandera (staple dish of chicken rice and beans) can be bought for around 100 pesos (3 USD). There is very easy access to Puerto Plata and Santiago by car and air conditioned buses. It can be a squeeze with four in the back of a compact car but you can buy an extra seat if you need the space. Local taxis can be hired by the day. Visitors to Luperon are struck by the friendliness of the local people.
